The history of Granada

Granada was founded by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba in 1524 and is one of the oldest American cities found on solid ground. While the city made a name for itself as an important component in trade, it was initially the home to a variety of indigenous communities. Remains and exhibits can be found to showcases the Pre-Columbian period in the city.

While Granada was naturally wealthy with its abundance in gold and fertile land, it was never smooth sailing for the city. The city’s abundance attracted pirates who frequently attacked Granada and forced them to construct a huge fortress to protect and preserve their land. Once the city seemed to have conquered the pirates, Granada moved onto the neighbouring cities in a battle of supremacy. After an almighty war, León and Granada eventually found neutral ground and ended the feud in 1857, an astounding 36 years after Nicaragua gained independence from Spain and 22 years after the country became a republic.
