What to expect...
With about 430,000 inhabitants, Iquitos is the fifth largest city in Peru - and the largest in the world, which is not accessible by road! Explore the jungle only reachable by plane or one of the rivers. See the district of Belén, built entirely on stilts. Have you ever seen dolphins, piranhas, caimans and hand-sized tarantulas up close seen? The Peruvian rainforest and waters await you. Please note, clean drinking water can be difficult to find, so bring some water along!
Already on day one, an great adventure is in store. Upon arrival in Iquitos, you'll head to the city. Your tour begins at the Plaza del 28. Junio. This is the biggest of the city with one of the main attractions, the Morona Cocha - a locomotive from the 20th century. Afterwards you go to the district of Belen and visit the famous market. You will also visit the "Plaza de Armas" and the Malecon Taratacá. The tour ends at the boat museum "Ayapua".
Hotel Acosta, 3* standard (or similar)
After breakfast you will go to the habour and take your boat to the Heliconia lodge. The boat tour takes about 1,5 hours and leads you through the impressive jungle. You will take a short stop at the monkey island, where you can spot wild monkey. After lunch at the lodge you will go to the Yanamono reserve in the afternoon. You will learn a lot about the flora and fauna of the rainforest. After sunset you go on another boat tour to listen to the sounds of the jungle.
Heliconia Lodge, 2-3* standard (or similar) Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Your day starts early with an excursion to see some of the different birds in the Amozonas. After your return to the lodge you can enjoy a rich breakfast. Later on you visit an indigenous village (tribe of the Yaguas) and learn more about their ways of living. In the afternoon you have the possibility to go for piranha fishing. During a night walk you can discover all the animals that don't show up at day.
Heliconia Lodge, 2-3* standard (or similar) Breakfast & Lunch
After breakfast you'll go on another jungle excursion to see the huge waterlilies, that are typical for the Amazonas. A truly beautiful sight! After a lunch at the lodge you return to Iquitos by boat.
