What to expect... With a depth of up to 3,269 meters, the Colca Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world and twice as deep as The Grand Canyon! Cave drawings have been found in the area that date back around 5000 years ago. During the Spanish colonization, gold and silver were mined here, but after the independence of Peru, the valley was rather untouched. In 1975 the valley became accessible by car and the new expanded infrastructure makes it possible to get to know the amazing nature of this area. When the sun rises and the mighty Andean peaks cast their shadows across the canyon, you'll be truly mystified. Get lost in all that Colca Canyon has to offer.

Itinerary
Early in the morning you'll head off to the Andes mountains from Arequipa. The trail takes you past the majestic Misti, Chachani and Picchupicchu volcanoes, for an unforgettable view. In the Pampa Cañahuas National Park you may encounter vicunañas, a relative of the alpaca, who live at an altitude of 3,400 meters above sea level. At the other end of the park is Pata Wasi, a small village, which in Quechua means "high house." Take a closer look at the rock formations in this area, including the Misti and Chachani volcanoes you saw before. With a cocoa or tea, the altitude is easier to bear, as you'll continue onwards to 4,820 meters of elevation to the Pata Pampa, high ground. Moving on to the village of Chivay, you'll have a wonderful view over the colorful terraced fields. Then you'll take a small break for lunch in the small village of Coporaque. As a great end to this day, you can rest in a thermal bath before heading back to your accommodation.

Today you'll go on an hour-long walk along the edge of the ravine, where you can enjoy the impressive view of the Andes and the canyon. On the way, you'll learn about the Collaguas, a culture that lived in this region around 500 AD, before the Incas. During that time, they set up impressive terraces and agriculture systems. In another location, you'll encounter the Tumbas Colgantes, or hanging graves, which were built into the rock wall. Then you'll go on to the villages of Maca and Yanque and see a beautiful church. At noon, you'll stop at Chivay for a break and return from there to Arequipa. Be sure to soak in all the sights one last time before leaving this majestic area. As today is your last day, you can alternatively go directly from Colca Valley to Puno and continue on your trip.

If you would like to see how a typical family lives in the Andes, this is the best way to find out! Immerse yourself in a family life with this optional offer. A resident of Coporaque will pick you up at your hotel after breakfast and take you to your home for the day. Depending on the time of the year, you will have different tasks that you will be taking part in this day. Some things that you can expect to do is working in a field, sowing and helping with the harvest. At lunch, you will sit with your guest family and enjoy local dishes. In the afternoon you'll go to the natural baths, which are frequently visited by locals. After an enjoyable day, you will be returned to your hotel.
