Turquino Nationalpark

The history of the Turquino National Park
Before this breath-taking region was considered a protected national reserve, it was the base for Fidel Castro’s rebel army. The rugged terrain, bushy thickets, hilly landscape and flourishing wilderness made for the perfect hiding spot for revolutionaries as well as the ideal launching point for clandestine attacks against the Batista forces. In 1991, the park was officially established as a protected reserve with special attention being paid to the original bases and guerrilla camp within the reserve. These rich historical spots have been commemorated as historical sites with museums showcasing memorabilia and telling the stories of the Cuban war. For tourists intrigued by the revolution of Cuba, the Turquino National Park is the perfect destination to experience the full scope of the war as well as enjoying the backdrop of the treasure that exists today in Cuba.
Excursions in the Turquino National Park
As with most ecological and historical sites in Cuba, there is a great deal to do and see. The Turquino National Park is not only in the heart of the Sierra Maestro Mountain Range, but is also home to the country’s highest peak. The Pico Mountain in the Turquino Reserve can be reached on a number of hiking routes with guided walks also available throughout the park. From bird watching to animal spotting, there is more than enough to see in the reserve. River rafting is also available nearby so if you are looking for an exciting adventure along the rapids of the flowing Cuban rivers then this is the ideal opportunity.
While ecotourism is extremely popular in the reserve, there is also the additional element of the park’s dynamic history. The museums and commemorations of the revolutionary war in Cuba are also highlighted in the reserve giving historians a piece of Cuba’s story amongst the wilderness which hid Fidel Castro’s army.
