The story of Soroa

In 1856, two Spanish brothers embarked on an adventure that led them to the Soroa region. In the hopes of making a fortune as coffee producers, Lorenzo and Antonio Soroa Munagorri started looking after the plantations and expanded their empire to include all of the other plantations as well. While the two brothers were the namesake for the region, it is the natural beauty and wealthy neighbours who caused the greatest interest in Soroa. In 1940, Antonio Arturo Sánchez Bustamante built the ‘Castle of the Clouds’ with a no-expenses-barred attitude and this exquisite architectural masterpiece remains there in all of its exquisite glory. Soon the plantations and the castle were put in good company with the development of a gorgeous garden made entirely of orchids. In 1952, Tomás Felipe Camacho began his orchid garden, the very garden which now contains over 700 orchid species and is considered one of the most important orchid growing facilities in the world.

With coffee plantations, orchid gardens and castles, Soroa is a truly unique destination with a number of attractions both natural and man-made. Combined with the Soroa Falls, the Rio Bayate and the Rio Manatiales, Soroa is a natural paradise with man-made heaven accenting its beauty to perfection.
