The history of Bagan

Bagan was founded in 1044 when King Anawrahta forcefully took the throne. He was the one to introduce Buddhism into the country and was behind the construction of Bagan’s first temple, The Grand Shwezigon. The King was passionate about the scriptures which were held by the Mons who enlightened him and were eventually taken from them by force when they refused to hand them over.

He was killed by a wild buffalo but his Dynasty remained in power for another 200 years after his death. Many of the temples were built during this time period and it was even considered to be the Golden Age of the region.

King Narathihapati built the extravagant pagoda which left the city in financial ruins during the attack of the Kublai Khan in 1287. This was not the only destruction the city faced as in 1975 a massive earthquake hit Bagan and left many of the famous structures damaged.

In 1990 further dismay occurred as the Myanmar government passed a relocation movement in which all the residents of Bagan were forced to move to an underdeveloped region now known as New Bagan.
