The history Leh

The city of Leh has an interesting history, and one that has been influenced by its neighbours along the way. King Sengge Namgyal ruled the city until the 17th century; however it was during this time that the city came under attack by the Kashmiri Muslims. Leh became the capital city of the region and flourished especially between the 1920’s and the 1930’s, during which time the bazaar received camel-trains and loaded ponies each day. This changed when the Chinese border was closed suddenly and the fortunes started diminishing until tourism became a leading market.

The city was also very important for the Indian army and after two wars; Leh had proven its strategic worth.
