How Jodhpur became the Blue City

The city of Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by the chief of the Rathore Clan, Rao Jodha. Legend has it that in order for construction of the Mehrangarh Fort to begin the chief had to remove a rather disgruntled hermit from the cave he called home. Once Rao Jodha succeeded in driving the hermit away the fort was built to reach an almighty 400 feet above the landscape. The fort is also rumoured to have had a man buried alive in its foundation.

The Brahmins are a group of Indians which have a priestly status. It is believed that the Brahmins brought about the tradition of the blue homes as a way to signify their own status in society and wealth. This trend then spread throughout the population and now almost all the houses in Jodhpur are painted blue or adorned with blue tiles. With the sea of blue houses set against the backdrop of the desert it is clear how the name Blue City came about.
