Driving Havana to Holguin Tour Itinerary
With this tour, the journey is its own reward. Experience eleven of Cuba’s fifteen diverse provinces in just eight days. While most self-drive tours finish in Central Cuba, at the end of the highway, this tour takes you further, to the historic sites and pristine natural landscapes on the eastern side of the island.
Below you’ll find the day-by-day breakdown for our Drive Havana to Holguin tour.
In the morning you'll meet with an English-speaking SC Travel Adventures representative. He or she will give you all the information you need to know about your trip and how to navigate in Cuba. You'll also get the pick-up information for your rental car and your detailed map package. Spend the rest of the day exploring Havana! There's a walking tour of Old Havana – La Habana Vieja – available since it's almost impossible to navigate the narrow streets of the old town by car. Your hotel is about 20 minutes from the colonial centre of the city and the major attractions therein.
Hotel Comodoro Breakfast
Today your road trip begins! You'll take the Autopista A1 eastward. Your destination for the day is the beautiful beach of Playa Larga. To get here you must pass through the spectacular nature reserve on the Zapata Peninsula, a paradise for nature lovers. This is also a great place to learn more about some of Cuba’s more iconic wildlife, including the Cuban Turkey Vulture and the famous "Sausage Tree". Your accommodation for the evening is located on the famous Bay of Pigs, the site of the failed US invasion of the same name in 1961. Spend your first night outside of Havana relaxing and taking in the tranquil Caribbean atmosphere on the beautiful beach.

Today you get to put your navigational skills to good use. You'll travel to Cienfuegos along picturesque country roads. There's much to see in this enchanting city. You can explore the downtown area or go on a trip to the famous Cienfuegos Botanical Gardens. After you've spent some time experiencing the so called ‘Pearl of the South’ you can continue on to your final destination for the day – lively Trinidad. Here you'll find many magnificent and well-preserved colonial palaces. Take advantage of the afternoon by going for a walk in the old town. The evening, however, is when Trinidad really comes alive, so get out and enjoy the nightlife!
The drive for the day is approximately 250 km. Your route will take you over level plains with many sugarcane plantations. Because you have a long drive ahead of you we recommend getting an early start. The Autopista A1 ends in the small village of Majagua and from there you'll continue along the one-lane "Carretera Central". The eastern side of the island has even less traffic than Western and Central Cuba. Here you can expect to cross paths with both oxen and cyclists. Camagüey has a large, well-preserved old town and was the birthplace of the Cuban National Poet Nicolás Guillén.
Enjoy driving through the foothills of the Sierra Maestra Mountains, to beautiful Bayamo. This small provincial town is the site of some truly fascinating Cuban history. The famous Carlos Manuel de Céspedes was born here. He organized the 19th century struggle for Cuban independence from the Spanish Monarchy. When his son was taken hostage by the Spaniards in an attempt to quell the rebellion he sent the following message: "All Cubans are my sons." and then his son was executed.
Hotel Royalton Breakfast
You're just a few kilometres away from Santiago de Cuba – the birthplace of some of Cuba’s most distinct musical styles. The peaceful road leads you past the famous Basilica del Cobre, an important sanctuary and pilgrimage site for the Cuban people. This beautiful red and white basilica houses the famous statue the "Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre" (the merciful Virgin of copper). She is worshiped as the patron saint of Cuba by both Catholics and Afro-Cuban supporters of natural religions. It's also possible to visit "La Gran Piedra", one of the largest monoliths in the nearby Baconao Park. From here you'll have a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding mountains.
