Hemingway Tour in Havana

With our Hemingway Tour, you can follow in the footsteps of Ernest Hemingway and discover the inspiration for his novel “The Old Man and the Sea”. The Nobel Prize winner lived in his adoptive country for more than 20 years and on this tour you will have the chance to visit his favourite haunts. For example, room 511 on the fifth floor at the Ambos Mundos Hotel in Havana’s old town is where the author would always stay. Today, the room is presented as if the author had never left; there is an exhibition of his personal belongings, including his suitcase, the desk at which he would have written, his typewriter and a book on the night table. Your Hemingway Tour will then continue to the nearby traditional “Bodeguita del Medio” bar, where Hemingway’s favourite cocktail, the Mojito, is still served. Just a stone’s throw away from here is another one of his locals, the “El Floridita”. Here, there is a life-sized statue of Hemingway marking his favourite place at the bar, where he would enjoy a Daiquiri or two with movie stars such as the likes of Gary Cooper or Spencer Tracy. You will then take a private bus from Havana to the “Finca La Vigía”, the former 4 hectare estate of the author that is now home to a museum. It is spread over 3 floors and was not only where Hemingway would write, but it was also home to his cat which has now 50 descendents! Here, you will be able to see his desk, library, hunting trophies and his drinks bar and his “El Pilar” yacht, which is a fitting reminder of Hemingway’s passion for fishing. Our Hemingway Tour will then take you to Cojímar, a former fishing village. This incomparable setting served as inspiration for his best-selling book, “The Old Man and The Sea”. This is also where he would set sail on his yacht on his many fishing trips. He was also a regular at “La Terraza” restaurant, where he would often meet local fisherman, who later became inspiration for his novel. On the deck above the bay, the people of Cojímar have built a memorial to honour “Ernesto” Hemingway, and it is here where your Hemingway Tour will end as you head back to Havana. Although perhaps a fitting end to your tour would be to partake of a Mojito or Daiquiri in one of Hemingway’s famous watering holes when you return!
